Why VoiceXP?

Victoria, creator of VoiceXP

I'm a mother of a child with selective mutism, and for a long time I've been on a journey to support my son as he works through his anxiety and finds his voice in new environments.

I created VoiceXP in the hope that two things could come together: his love for visuospatial games and the chance to practice using his voice in safe, new contexts. By meeting him where he is: playful, visual, curious, I wanted to build a bridge that could help us break through, one sound at a time.

I'm not an expert; I'm a parent learning alongside my child. I'd love to hear from families with similar stories - what has helped your children speak in new environments? What hasn't? If VoiceXP becomes part of your journey, your feedback and shared experiences mean a lot. Together we can learn more about what helps kids find their voice.

Parental guide

For families using VoiceXP with Selective Mutism and anxiety goals.

As a mother to a child with Selective Mutism and anxiety, I know how challenging it can be to help them find their voice in new environments. Through a long journey of supporting my son with therapy, creating practice routines, and trying to make practice feel less like a chore and more like a game, I built these short lesson flows and sound games to support families like ours.

The idea

  • Your child chooses a self‑reported “readiness level” (the bird beak check) for the current environment.
  • The app meets them there and encourages small, doable progress through games.
  • After practice, the app can “evaluate” how the level moved based on engagement and the game outcome.

Tools for parents

  • Save practice locations locally on your device (for example: School, Grandma’s, Soccer).
  • See progress by location over time in the “Voice Comfort by Location” chart.
  • Optionally receive reminders when you arrive at a saved location (if location reminders are enabled).

How to read the chart

  • Reported = what your child selected on the beak check.
  • Evaluated = how the level moved after practice (based on how the activity went).

Small wins are still wins. If today’s win is simply showing up and trying, that counts — and we’ll celebrate it together.

Professional reference

From Julianne M Carroll, MA, LMFT, APCC (she/her)

From Alyna Abeleda-Mostajo, MS, CCC Speech Language Pathologist

"I really appreciate the 'VoiceXP' approach! I especially like how the app starts with identifying feelings, tying readiness levels to specific activities and allowing movement up and down based on performance and keeps the activities low-pressure, without requiring verbal responses. It feels very aligned with what we want for kids with selective mutism, which is reducing anxiety while still building participation. I also like how the activities make practicing regulation and redirection feel more like a game rather than a demand.”
